PLC splitter or planar lightwave circuit splitter is a type of passive optical power distribution device based on planar lightwave circuit technology and provides a low cost light distribution solution with features of small size, wide range of operating wavelength, stable reliability and good uniformity. The fiber optic PLC splitters are used to separate or combine optical signals, and it’s widely used in PON, ODN, FTTx networks to realize optical signal power splitting. There are many types of optical PLC splitter to meet with different applications in OLT and ONT connection and splitting of optical signals over FTTH (Fiber to the home) passive optical networks.


PLC splitter is especially important in FTTH networks, which shares a single PON network with many subscribers. Having no electronics and power in PLC splitter, it is very cost-effective to provide reliable light distribution solutions. With high volume usage, the PLC splitters are mainly used for various connection and distribution products (outdoor fiber distribution boxes) or network cabinets.


Mini Steel tube PLC splitter

Also can be referred to as blockless fiber PLC splitter or micro steel tube PLC splitter. Its appearance is very similar to bare PLC splitter, but it has a more compact stainless tube package which can provide a stronger fiber protection and there are connectors terminated at the fiber ends. The common fiber optic terminated connectors are SC, LC, FC & ST types, so that there is no need to splice the fiber during the installation. The steel tube plc splitter are universally used for different connections over distribution boxes ,enclosures or cabinets.

Q&A

Q: What's the difference between bare fiber PLC splitter and steel tube PLC splitter ?

A: The bare fiber splitter is a type of splitters without connectors. Its input and output are designed with bare fibers (generally use ribbon fiber to output). Bare fiber splitters are used for small spaces that can be easily placed in a formal joint boxes and splice closure. In order to facilitate welding, it does not need specially designed for space reserved.


Q: Is this blockless type PLC splitter can be used for fiber optic splice closure?

A: Yes, this steel tube PLC splitter can be installed in fiber optic splice closure easily to provide FTTH signal distribution. It also can be installed in fiber optic distribution boxes.


Q: Can you offer split ratio 20:80 optic splitter ?

A: Yes, we can offer. But for splitting ratio 20:80, it’s FBT splitter, not PLC Splitter. The former offers adjustable splitting ratio, while the latter offers equal split ratios for all branches.


Q: How to choose a right fiber optic splitter?

A: You should consider the costs & applications.

For example, splitting configurations below 1×4 are advised to use FBT splitter, while split configurations above 1×8 are recommended for PLC splitters. If only for a single wavelength transmission or dual, FBT splitter is better to save cost. If for PON broadband transmission, considering the future expansion and monitoring needs, PLC splitter is better.
