MTPMPO cabling system

Classified by MTP/MPO Polarity, there are 3 types of MTP/MPO patch cable:

Generally speaking, there are two ends in an optical link, one is the receiving end, the other is transmitting end, to complete the entire transmission process. It's necessary to ensure two ends are in an interconnected state. The matching between the transmitting end and receiving end can be called as polarity. The polarity ensures the MTP/MPO connectors and adapters can be plug correctly and precisely.

Keeping the right polarity is essential to the network. Polarity is the term defined by TIA-568 standard to explain how to make sure each transmitter is correctly connected to a receiver on the other end of a multi-fiber cable.

Classified by proper polarity defined by TIA 568 standard, there are 3 polarity types: named as Method A(type A), Method B(type B) and Method C(type C).

Polarity type A MTP/MPO patchcord

Type A cable, also known as straight cable, it has a key up on one connector end and a key down on the other connector end of the cable. This design allows the fibers to have the same position at each end of the cable.

Polarity type B

MTP/MPO patchcord

Method B is known as a reverse cable, it has key up orientation on both connector ends. This design allows each fiber to mate with the opposite end. This type of array mating results in an inversion, which means the fiber positions are reversed at each end.

Polarity type C

MTP/MPO patchcord

Method C, known as a pairs flipped cable, is the most complicated. There is pair-wise “cross-over” in the backbone cable, it has a key up on one end and a key down on the other end of the cable. This design allows each adjacent fiber on one end to be flipped on the other end

The MTP/MPO cables are the ideal high density cabling solution, but pose complex polarity questions. These polarity issues can be managed by selecting the correct type of MTP/MPO cable. Knowing the polarity of MPO/MTP system helps you better upgrade the 40G and 100G networks, and it will provide greater flexibility and reliability for your high density network.

Classified by fiber mode, there are 2 types MPO fiber optic patch cable:

✔ Singlemode MPO fiber optic patch cable

✔ Multimode MPO fiber optic patch cable

Singlemode fiber (SMF) MTP/MPO fiber patch cables

Single-mode fiber (SMF), also known as mono-mode fiber, is an optical fiber designed to carry only a single mode of light. The single mode fiber optic jumpers allow only one mode of light to pass along, and the diameter is very thin. Therefore, it can transmit signals at higher speeds with lower attenuation, more suitable for long-distance transmission.

A typical single-mode optical fiber has a core diameter between 8 and 10.5 µm and a cladding diameter of 125 µm. 9/125µm is commonly used. Single-mode fiber patch cable is composed of a fiber optic cable terminated with single mode fiber optic connectors at both ends. The jacket of SM patchcord is yellow by default.

According to different standards, there are 2 types of SMF, OS1 and OS2.

SM OS1 8fibers MPO/MTP Patch Cable

SM OS1 8fibers MPO/MTP Patch Cable

Yellow jacket

OS1 patch cable is used for indoor applications, and its transmission distance is upto 2km. The cable construction is tight buffered. OS1 single mode fibers are compliant with specifications of ITU-T G.652. A/B/C/D.

SM OS2 24fibers MPO-LC Patch Cable

SM OS2 24fibers MPO-LC Patch Cable

Yellow jacket

OS2 patch cable is used for outdoor applications, and its transmission distance is upto 10km. The cable construction is loose tube. OS2 single mode fibers are only compliant with ITU-T G.652C or ITU-T G.652D standards.

Multimode fiber (MMF) MTP/MPO fiber patch cables

Multimode fiber is available in two sizes, either 50/125 µm or 62.5/125 µm and a cladding diameter of 125 µm. Multi-mode fiber patch cable is composed of a fiber optic cable terminated with multimode fiber optic connectors at both ends. It can transmit multiple light modes. It is mainly used for short-distance transmissions such as buildings or campuses.

At present, there are 5 kinds of multi-mode fiber patchcord: OM1 patchcord, OM2 patchcord, OM3 patchcord, OM4 patch cord & OM5 patchcord. The letters “OM” stand for optical multimode.

OM1 12fibers MPO-MPO Patch cable

OM1 12fibers MPO-MPO Patch cable

OM1 fiber patch leads with a core size of 62.5 micrometers (µm), is orange jacket by default. The OM1 patchcords can support 10G Ethernet at transmission distance up to 33 meters. It is universally used for 100 Megabit Ethernet applications.

OM2 24fibers MPO-12* Dx LC Patch cable

OM2 24fibers MPO-12* Dx LC Patch cable

OM2 optical patch cords are also coming with an orange jacket and Its core size is 50µm instead of 62.5µm. It supports up to 10G Ethernet at a distance up to 82 meters. However it is oftenly used for 1 Gigabit Ethernet applications.

OM3 12fibers MPO-6*Dx LC Patch cable

OM3 12fibers MPO-6*Dx LC Patch cable

OM3 patchcord has a defaulted jacket color of aqua, with same core size of the OM2, 50 µm. This kind of patchcord supports 10 Gigabit Ethernet at distance up to 300 meters. It is commonly used in 10G ethernet, while it is able to support 40 Gigabit and 100 Gigabit Ethernet up to 100 meters.

OM4 24fibers MPO-MPO Patch cable

OM4 24fibers MPO-MPO Patch cable

OM4 patchcord share the same core size 50 µm and Aqua color with the OM3 cable, but It is a further improvement based on the latter. It allows 10G/s link distances of up to 550m compared to 300M with OM3. And it’s able to run 40/100GB up to 150 meters utilizing a MPO connector.

OM5 12Cores MPO-MPO Patch cable

OM5 12Cores MPO-MPO Patch cable

OM5 fiber is the newest type of multimode fiber, and it is backwards compatible with OM4. It has the same core size as OM2/3/4. The color of OM5 fiber jacket is lime green. The OM5 fiber patch cable can support at least four WDM channels at a minimum speed of 28Gbps per channel through the 850-953 nm window.

Single mode and multimode, and specifications (OS1, OS2 etc), MPO/MTP cable jackets are color-coded. Single mode cables are coded yellow. However, when purchasing single mode, always check the OS specification (OS1 and OS2) to ensure that the correct one is selected. Multimode cables are color-coded in aqua (also representing OM3 and OM4), and lime green for OM5. To avoid confusion between OM3 and OM4, violet colored jackets for OM4 were introduced in Europe by manufacturers and this color has started to be adopted in the USA.

According to different fire protection requirements, MPO/MTP jackets are divided into PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride), LSZH (low smoke zero halogens) and OFNP (optical fiber non-conductivity, interlayer) etc.

Classified by cable jacket, there are 3 types of MTP/MPO cable:

✔ PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) MTP/MPO patch cable

✔ LSZH(low smoke zero halogens) MTP/MPO patch cable

✔ OFNP(Optical Fiber Nonconductive Riser) MTP/MPO patch cable

MPO Patch Cable: The Ultimate FAQ Guide

Q: For 40G. Do I need a 12 fibre cable or 8 fibre cable?

A: 40G transceivers that require fibre cables with MTP connectors only need 8 fibres to operate so it would make sense to assume that MTP cables for 40G transceivers have 8 fibre MTP connectors and use 8 fibre cable. However, MTP connectors are also used in 10G networking where the 12 fibre MTP connector is used along with 12 fibre cable. To make it easier for manufacturers, most only use the 12 fibre connector as this will work in all applications and then choose where to use this with either 8 fibre or 12 fibre cable. So a 12 fibre MTP cable with the correct polarity will work in exactly the same way when used in a 40G transceiver as an 8 fibre cable. The only difference is that 4 of the fibres will not be used (they will be dark).

Q: Male or female? what's difference between them?

A: MTP connectors can either be male or female, often referred to as the gender type of a connector. The male connector has pins, whereas the female connector has no pins. No pins need to be combined with pins to connect. So if you use adaptors to connect two cables, they must be one male and one female.

Q:I could find only UPC and APC connectors on your website. Do you have any other cable which has PC connector?

A:The PC connector has been replaced by the UPC connector. UPC is an improvement of the PC fiber connector with a better surface finish after an extended polishing and the optical return loss is higher than PC structure.

Q: What is the difference between MTP and MPO?

A: MTP is the USConec brand name MPO that we use. The terms are interchangeable.

Q: How do I know what gender I need?

A: Gender refers to the metal guide pins coming out of the endface of the MTP. Most transceivers (QSFP modules) have male pins, so you'll need female cables to interconnect them.

Q: If I'm connecting directly from transceiver to transceiver, what polarity cable do I need?

A: You'll probably need a Method B Female to Female cable. Please check with your documentation to confirm

Q: How many times can I mate/demate the connector and still maintain performance?

A: Under normal use and proper cleaning, the connectors can survive well over 1000 mate/demates.

Q: Are you a factory or a trade company?

A: We are a wholesale factory which is located in Zhejiang, Jiaxin. Our foreign trade office is located in Shanghai.

Q: Are these in stock?

A: No, there is a lead time to build all MTP cable assemblies.

Q: How can I order samples?

A: Please send us an inquiry, once we get the information, we will contact you. The sample could be provided for free.

Q: What is the scale of your company?

A: Our factory is located in Zhejiang, China, with more than 100 workers and 10 technicists. More than 500 thousands patch cord could be manufactured within 1 month.

Q: How is your quality?

A: All the products are manufactured with best raw material and high technology, we only provide high quality products. If you are doubt, please contact us for a free sample.

Q: What is your MOQ?

A: For cables, we don’t have a MOQ, you can buy any number. But some other products have a MOQ, you can ask our account manager to discuss more.

Q: What mode of transportation do you support?

A: Basically we do EXW, FOB, CIF and DAP for the bulk cargo. Samples are sent by express.

Q: Can I put a customized label on the MTP cable? I need to add specific S/N so we can easily identify them.

A: We can customize it without extra charge, you can contact our account manager directly to discuss more.

Q: How can I know the price for the products I need?

A: Please click “SEND INQUIRY”, once our account manager receive your inquiry, they will contact you with email or whatsapp. Please remember to check the information.

Q:What Is The Structure Of MPO Patch Cable And How To Classify It?

MPO fiber optic connectors include optical fibers, sheaths, coupling components, metal rings, pins, dust caps, etc., and the bow and foot parts are divided into two forms: male and female. The male connector has two PIN pins, while the female connector does not. The connections between the MPO connectors are precisely aligned via PIN pins. When the connector is mated, a spring mounted on the end of the ferrule will provide a push to the ferrule to lock it with the adapter. There is a "key" on one side of the connector body and a "bump" points are used to limit the relative position of the connector, namely P1, P2, etc. On the connector body side there is a marking called a "white dot" that designates the insertion side of the connector.
