According to the standards proposed by TIA and ISO, twisted pair cables are divided into Cat3, Cat4, Cat5/Cat5e, Cat6/Cat6a, Cat7, Cat8 types. Different type of cables have different electrical properties. In principle, the larger the number, the newer the version, the more advanced the technology, the smaller the crosstalk, the wider the bandwidth, and of course the price is more expensive.
Category 5 (Cat5) cable, the most common cables existing today, is suitable to carry Ethernet signals, but also telephony and video. Cat5 provides a bandwidth of up to 100MHz, and its speed can range from 10Mbps to a maximum of 100 Mbps. It's the first choice for Fast Ethernet (100Mbps) due to its good quality and low price. The cable comes as UTP (Unshielded Twisted Pair) cable, but can also be found as SCTP (Screened Twisted Pair). The downside of Cat5 cable is that it is more susceptible to crosstalk (interference).Due to this disadvantage, it has become obsolete and is being replaced by the new Cat5e specification. Cat5 cabling is outdated and has effectively been replaced by Cat5e.
Category 5e (Category 5 Enhanced) Ethernet cables are the enhanced version of Category 5 cables, and it can provide faster transfer rates, from 1000 Mbps and up to 1Gbps (Gigabit Ethernet). Another advantage is that Cat5e can be more flexible, so you can bend it to fit it in smaller spaces. CAT5 cables will work for network connections that are under 100Mbps, while a CAT5e cable can work up to 1000Mbps, a gigabit. CAT5e cable is also better than CAT5 in ignoring "crosstalk" or wire interference from the cable itself. Although Cat6/Cat6a and Cat7 cables exist and can work at faster speeds, CAT5e cables are suitable for most small networks. The cost for each cable varies by manufacturer and vendor, but usually, Cat5 cable is cheaper than Cat5e.
